Tasting Note
Crimson with a dark core. Perfumed red and black fruits—deep cherry, red currant, raspberry confit and ripe plum—lifted spice, game and floral notes with dried porcini. Firm, velvety tannins, concentrated mid-palate and a long, savory finish; cellars 10–15 years.
Food Pairing
Western: roast lamb, venison, roast pork, mushroom risotto, roast beef. Asian: Peking duck, char siu (Cantonese BBQ pork), Korean BBQ (bulgogi), miso-glazed mushrooms or ramen with shiitake, teriyaki salmon.
Production Method
Hand-picked Abel clone fruit; indigenous yeast fermentation in open-top fermenters, hand-plunged once daily, 25 days vat time. Pressed and aged 16 months in French oak barriques (35% new). Bottled without fining or filtration.
Vineyard Info
Escarpment (founded by Larry McKenna in 1999) farms the home block on Te Muna Road. Kupe is a single-vineyard wine from close-planted vines on free-draining alluvial gravels, producing concentrated, site-expressive Pinot Noir.
